Be alert: full road closures for Centurion cycle race

Roads expected to be closed from 06:00 to 15:00 for the 95km race.

Motorists should be aware of full road closures as cycling enthusiasts gather on Sunday for the Medihelp trapNET race.

Tshwane metro and traffic authorities were expected to secure full road closures for the event, working closely with event organisers.

Roads would be closed from 06:00 to 15:00 for the 95km race.

Full road closure would especially be around Supersport Park, affecting the following roads:

– West Avenue towards the N1 highway – fully closed.

– West and Lenchen avenues – fully closed.

– West Avenue and upper South Street south-bound – closed.

– West and Thea avenues will fully closed.

– West Avenue and John Vorster Drive will be under controlled closure.

– Olievenhoutbosch Road will be under full closure around Makro.

– Van Reyneveld Avenue and the R21 highway will be under controlled closure.

Cyclists expected to start from Supersport Park in Centurion and travel east to Olievenhoutbosch Road where they would cross Jean Avenue before turning right into Main Road.

The route would then turn left into Nellmapius Drive, over the R21 highway, where cyclists would eventually turn right into Delmas Road (R50).

This stretch with rolling hills would take cyclists to the R51 with gradual climbing to the highest point (1 663m) at 41km, and then back towards Pretoria east on the M6 (Graham Road, which becomes Lynnwood Road) which is mostly downhill.

The route then turns left into Solomon Mahlangu Drive where cyclists would face the steepest climb of the day at around 77km.

A left turn would take them under the R21 highway on Van Ryneveld Avenue and around the Waterkloof airf orce base with one last small climb on River Road before the fast descent down Lenchen Avenue back to Supersport Park.
