Pretoria’s finest school artists celebrated

The cream of Pretoria's creative talent crop was showcased at an exhibition

Recently the Department of Education in conjunction with the Tshwane District 3 hosted their annual art exhibition to showcase the cream of the crop of creative talent in local schools.

The Gauteng Department of Education is divided into 15 districts. The Tshwane North D3 which consists of 176 schools in Pretoria North, West, East and Moot recently participated in an art exhibition from 12 to 18 September at the Magalies Special School is a LSEN (Learners with Special Educational Needs) in Rietfontein.

Elma Harmse, subject educational specialist for Tshwane North district explained the Creative Arts curriculum consists of music, dance, drama and visual art.

“Once a year all the best of the best has an opportunity to exhibit their work at the department exhibition. Every school brings their best work to the exhibition,” Harmse said.

At the official opening on 14 September, the various schools’ performing arts pupils performed.

“It was absolutely amazing,” Harmse said of the exhibition and performances.

BB Nissan Sinoville sponsored the exhibition and prizes for the winners of the three lucky draws. They also made sure there were refreshments for the performing art pupils.

Harmse, who has 10 years’ experience in her position, said while the department had bad publicity over the past few years, there was a definite improvement especially within her district.

“Education is improving. I can see where we have been and where we are now in terms of education and especially in arts.”
