Supersport United and Highlands Park square off in MTN 8 final

Saturday’s Cup final is yet another opportunity for United coach Kaitano Tembo to silence some of his critics.

Supersport United will once again contest the final of the MTN 8 this weekend at the Orlando stadium in Soweto.

The Pretoria giants face the high-flying Highlands Park on Saturday evening, hoping to avenge last season’s loss to Cape Town City.

United are in the final having eased past rivals Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 (on aggregate) last month, in Atteridgeville while Highlands Park crushed Orlando Pirates and Polokwane City on their way to the finals.

Saturday’s cup final, is yet another opportunity for United coach Kaitano Tembo to silence some of his critics.

“I have paid my school fees. I started at this club as a player, I became a captain. I then coached the junior teams and the MDC (MultiChoice Diski Challenge) team. I was an assistant coach for many years and I worked under different coaches. I have been a caretaker coach in this club before and now I’m the coach. So, I know this club. I know what it is about,” Tembo said.

The Zimbabwe-born coach has an impressive CV as he has done all the hard work as a player and coach

On paper, his United are favourites especially given that this is their third straight final.

They have a strong and successful Cup history as wind behind their back against a Highlands Park team that has not played in any cup final in over three decades.

Despite his record, Tembo is still underappreciated for his work but believes in keeping things “simple”.

“I wouldn’t know why people are sometimes doubting. Maybe I don’t speak the fancy language and maybe I’m too simple.”

Both teams come into the final buoyed by recent wins. Highlands defeated Polokwane City 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash while Supersport scrapped past AmaZulu to move to sixth in the table.
