Deaf marimba band makes noise at Brooklyn Theatre
The world’s first deaf marimba band received a standing ovation after performing for local school kids and parents.

The Dominican Band from Hammanskral, the world’s first deaf marimba band, received a standing ovation after performing for local school kids and parents at the Trees Are Life prize-giving ceremony at the Brooklyn Theatre on Wednesday.
This gala is an annual competition which is part of the Gaufestival.

“It takes place the last week of September and first week of October every year and is run from the Brooklyn Theatre.
“It is part of the education and outreach part of the Gaufestival. We bring in people would not have access to a modern performance theatre. The municipality helps by supplying buses to transport these kids to the Brooklyn Theatre,” said Gaufestival spokesperson Siobhan Muller.

“One week of the Gaufestival is an outreach program where there is dance, fine art, opera and orchestras. But the prize-giving contest, which we do in conjunction with Sappi (South African Pulp and Paper Industries), is to give prizes to children who entered in our categories, which include poetry, literature and art.”
