Hugo bel die polisie prosthetic man’s painting in demand

The man with the prosthetic leg in the “Hugo, bel die polisie” video talks about that day and his paintings.

A man who became famous when seen in a video trying to run after a white motor with his prosthetic leg, says his paintings are suddenly in demand.

The video was filmed by his neighbour in Pretoria North last year when a fight broke out in the street.

Wynand Janssen said he was busy working on his flamingoes painting when he heard the commotion in front of their gate.

Another one of Wynand Janssens’s paintings.

It is then when we see him running towards the gate and the young men jumping in the car and driving away.

Janssens says his wife regularly looked after the young blonde-headed woman’s little one. The young blonde-headed woman’s boyfriend and Janssens son has never seen eye to eye.

On the day of the incident, the bomb finally burst between the young blonde woman’s boyfriend and Janssens son.

The young blonde-headed woman’s boyfriend left Janssens house and returned shortly after with friends when the big fight broke out.

The video only resurfaced a year and a month later which inspired some caricatures and even some songs.

Janssens said they could only join in the laughter.

Another one of Wynand Janssens’s paintings. There is one song though that does not get his stamp of approval.

“The song sung by Jak de Priester is really stupid and a load of nonsense. He (Jak) has no respect for old people or people with a disability. There is nothing funny about being like that,” he said about the “Hugo, bel die polisie” song.

Janssens said he lost his right leg after a forklift weighing 2.5 tonnes fell on it.

“I had six operations on my knee if I remember correctly. Seven years ago they had to amputate,” said Janssen.

After Janssens appeared on Rian van Heerden’s radio program earlier this week, many people said they wanted to buy his flamingo painting that he painted on that day.

“I do not have Facebook, my daughter showed me the messages where people made offers on the painting,” he said.

The first offer was R1 000, then R1 300 and then it increased to R2 000.

“I have been painting since my childhood. Then I stopped for a while. After my son’s death in 2016 because of the chemo I took up my paintbrush again.”

Janssens said he has sold some of his paintings to his cousin who lives in Heidelberg.

“I do not have a favourite medium – I paint with everything from water colours to oil paint,” he said.

Janssens said he is planning to still paint his children and grandchildren.
