Laudium residents help police nab suspected car battery thief

The man was found in a yard in Laudium with the battery early on Friday morning.

Laudium residents together with a local community safety group apprehended a man stealing a car battery on Friday morning.

The 42-year-old man was caught with the battery in Taj Street by community members at around 05:45 who sounded the alarm, according to PAJ Community Patrollers supervisor Waseem Hansa.

“We helped to apprehend the man and handed him over to Laudium police,” he said.

“He will appear in court next week.”

Hansa said there had been incidents of car battery thefts in the area.

“It is unclear at this stage if this man can be linked to these other crimes.”

The Laudium police confirmed the arrest.

“The victim reported opening his door on Friday morning and seeing a man walking in his yard carrying the car battery,” said Laudium police spokesperson Constable Simon Chokoe.

“The homeowner then ran for help while the man jumped over a nearby fence and fled on foot.”

“He was then immediately apprehended and the battery was seized.”

Laudium police staiton commander Lieutenant Colonel Jahannes Britz applauded members of the community for continuously working with the police to fight crime in the area.
