Moot learner shines in debate

A Grade 11 learner in the Moot won several awards at the National Public Speaking Competition of Podium Fun in the Paarl recently.
Rietfontein resident and Eduplex High School learner Nicole Basson emerged as an overall grade winner for the reading section of the competition and was recommended to be a reader on radio.
She also won the English and bilingual speaker sections.

During a gala dinner, she was one of three learners, from different provinces, to be honoured for her contribution to Afrikaans with the award of solo flight status.
Basson told Rekord that she had embarked on her first public speaking competition in Grade 1.
“I enjoyed it so much that I participated in every possible competition afterwards,” she said.
“I participate in the experienced speaker divisions.”
Not only did Basson participate in public speaking competitions but also in prepared and unprepared reading competitions at provincial and national levels.

She said she has already won many awards but her love lay in languages, art and athletics – long distances and cross country.
“I write poems and short stories in my spare time and will sometimes paint or draw something when the opportunity presents itself,” she said.
“I am also the language editor of my school’s newspaper.”
