A Moot resident’s campaign to supply local women with free pepper spray to defend themselves has been described as a “success”.
Eersterust resident Caelyn Fisher’s campaign Am I Next Campaign managed to collect 1 500 pepper sprays.
“The day was a great success,” said Fisher.
“However, this was not even enough. The need for it is so big.”
The campaign was launched in Hatfield on Saturday, which was also Fisher’s 19th birthday.
“We had to postpone our visit to the University of Johannesburg on Monday because there were no pepper sprays left.”
Fisher said she would “definitely” continue with her campaign.
“We are still asking for donations and sponsors for the project,” she said.

“It will be great if we will be great if we are able to meet the demand for these sprays.”
Fisher said she also had another goal planned with her campaign.
“I would like to host a motivational talk to empower women,” she said.
Her idea for the pepper spray project came following the murder of South African women such as Uyinene Mrwetyana, Jesse Hess and Leighandre Jegels.
“I was in bed one morning when I saw all of these terrible things happening around us. I literally started crying and decided that enough is enough.”

The aim of the project was to hand out pepper spray bottles to women all around the country, with the focus mostly on students.
The canisters would have motivational quotes written on them.
“I started asking around and the response was just overwhelming,” she said.
“The company that I work for, Forex Kings, also sponsored R20 000 towards the project.”
She said local singer, Shekhinah also contributed towards the campaign.
Shekhinah’s media team confirmed to Rekord that she did make a contribution towards the project.
Fisher said she grew up in Eersterust.
“I have always wanted to start a non-profit organisation,” she said.
She said she aimed to register her pepper spray campaign as a non-profit organisation.
“I have other plans for this campaign as well,” she said.
“It would be nice to be able to teach these girls self-defence to be able to assist them. I would also like to create a platform where they can come for psychological health.”
