Inconvenience after Onderstepoort landfill closes
Onderstepoort landfill closed after it was confirmed it reached its lifespan.
The Onderstepoort landfill site on the R566 road in Bon Accord in the north of Pretoria will finally close its doors to the public in December.
This as upset residents recently contacted Rekord about the “sudden” closure of the landfill.
Some residents complained that the nearest alternative landfill sites in Rosslyn and Wonderboom were “too far away” and “too expensive”.
Local ward councillor Hannes Coetzee confirmed that the Onderstepoort site would be closed.
“Actually, it was announced two years ago that the landfill was going to close,” said Coetzee.

An environmental impact study at the landfill site at the time found that the site had reached its full capacity.
Coetzee said although no garden refuse was accepted at the landfill site at this time, household refuse was still accepted at the landfill site.
“By December it will be completely closed,” he said.
Coetzee said the council worked with waste management MEC Dana Wannenburg to find solutions for landfill sites in northern Pretoria.
“We are looking at alternatives that may include recycling.”

Another solution was to set up a temporary “miniature” landfill site for garden waste at Zambezi.
However, Coetzee says it has not yet materialised.
Coetzee said other landfill sites in the area could also be used.
“The problem is, however, that residents do not pay to use the landfill site. The problem then arises that illegal dumping then takes place.”
Landfill management head Frans Dekker told Rekord earlier this year that the sites in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve were identified as alternatives to Onderstepoort.
