UPDATE: Repair of west home damaged by truck starts

Construction workers started with repair work on the house on Monday this week.

Work to repair a Pretoria West home destroyed when a runaway truck crashed into it has started.

The Prinsloo family’s home was destroyed when a truck drove through the Ferdinand Street property in September.

The truck was coming down R80 Mabopane highway.

Homeowner Douw Prinsloo said construction workers started with repair work on the house on Monday this week.

According to the foreman on the job, Jack Williams from DG & CJ Construction, workers started to demolish the damaged part of the home on Monday.

“We aim to be done with cleaning the demolished rubble by Thursday, and start building on Friday,” he said.

“We are going to change a little bit on the home, but Douw will be with us all the way and let us know what he wants changed as we build.”

He said if all went well, the Prinsloos would be able to move into their new home by middle November.

In the meantime, the family was staying at a rented home in the Moot, Prinsloo told Rekord.

While he said the family was “very happy” the home was being repaired, he was still concerned with the speed motorists travelled on the Mabopane highway.

“We are very happy and excited to be back in our home soon, and be able to spend Christmas here,” he said.

Prinsloo said his family have been living in their home for the past 13 years.

“However, I still fear for my safety because of the high speed motorist’s travel on the Mabopane highway,” he said.

He said in the years they have lived in their home, they have experienced many accidents.

“It’s not just accidents either – there have been instances where tyres from vehicles have shot into our property,” he said.

Previously, Prinsloo told Rekord that he had just gone to rest on a couch on 3 September, when he heard “tyre screeching noises” on the day of the accident.

“At first I thought it was an accident on the highway, but the next moment when I turned around I just saw the truck coming toward our house,” he said.

A large part of their home was destroyed in the crash, including the living area, lounge, TV room, walk-in closet, bathroom and a spare room and bathroom.

The roof of the house also shifted on impact.
