Centurion volunteers rebuild church in Mozambique

A group of Centurion volunteers helped to rebuild a church belonging to the community of Buzi in Mozambique that was destroyed in a devastating cyclone earlier this year.
The team, which formed part of the Project Nova Vida, and local people managed to rebuild the church in just three days.
“Project Nova Vida, which means “new life”, is a helping hand from South African churches reaching out to their brothers and sisters in Mozambique in the Sofala province,” said project coordinator Ilse Ferreira.
“Funding from the Dutch Reformed Church Moreleta, Church in South and ‘Kerk sonder mure’ Centurion and Midstream provided the funding.”

The Centurion team left early on 19 September and travelled for three days to the remote village of Buzi.
The community there had witnessed how their church was washed away by Cyclone Idai and its floodwaters in March 2019.
“Upon their arrival, the team spent the afternoon planning the church at the new building site preparing all material and templates for the week’s work,” Ferreira said.
“The team divided into two, the church building team and the clothing packing and housekeeping team.
“These teams worked 16 hours a day for the next three days to complete a 20-by-10m steel construction with the minimum tools and no electricity.”
Ferreira said the gratitude the community of Buzi showed towards the team following the construction was overwhelming.

“The one thing that left the entire team in awe was the presence of God and unity in Christ Jesus between South Africans and their Mozambican brothers and sisters,” she said.
“The love, friendship and prayers that were shared in this time were eternal and sacred.”
