Centurion elderly woman call for more youths to become involved in SPCA

“It is a disgrace that only elderly women spend time with the animals and taking part in drives to help the SPCA in Tshwane and that there are hardly any youngsters.”

More young people should become involved in the SPCA, said an Irene woman who has raised more than R100 000 for the organisation over the past four years.

“Nobody really supports the SPCA, no government organisation or lottery,” said Barbara Tanton.

“It is a disgrace that only elderly women spend time with the animals and taking part in drives to help the SPCA in Tshwane and that there are hardly any youngsters.”

Tanton began an annual jumble sale to raise funds for the Centurion SPCA four years ago.

She started doing this after reading an article about now the SPCA was in dire need of funds.

This year’s event was held yesterday.

Work for it already started in January with the collection of clothes, books, games and other goods from the community in Irene.

“People in our community are very giving and they are a dog-and-cat loving community, so they really play a huge part with their donations.”

Tanton said she also had an amazing team of women workers who helped her price and sort out various materials.

Centurion SPCA volunteer Joanne van der Watt agreed that more youths needed to start similar initiatives to support the SPCA.

Van der Watt said schools should also get involved.

“Puppies and kittens are cute for the young ones; however, when they grow up, the little ones forget about these animals.”

She felt that every community that has an SPCA in their district had a social responsibility to “step up and speak for the voiceless – which are the animals”.

Christina Masemola from the SPCA welcomed the donation.

“The SPCA only relies on donations and fundraisers,” she said.

She said the initiative by Tanton was one of the biggest fundraisers for the Centurion SPCA.

“We are very grateful for Tanton as she plays a big role in organising the smooth running of this initiative,” she said.

Masemola encouraged communities in Pretoria to consider holding such initiatives to help the organisation.

“We would like to encourage residents to assist where they can as the SPCA cannot do its work alone,” said Masemola.

“The animals need us.”

the initiative said it needed more youth to start driving similar initiatives and also support the SPCA through giving their time.
