Dorandia welcomes Rian and his straatbraai guests
People of Angelica Street welcomed the iconic 'straatbraai' this past Friday.

Dorandia residents in the north of Pretoria gave the Scenic Drive with Rian Jacaranda FM team a heartwarming welcome last Friday with their monthly straatbraai (street barbecue).
The evening was one of many firsts.
This as special guests such as celebrity chef and TV personality Jan Braai and Rian van Heerden’s mother attended.
Wynand Janssens from the viral “Hugo, bel die polisie” video was also in attendance. Janssens even sold his now-famous flamingo painting for a whopping R10 000.
Jacaranda FM presenter Rian van Heerden had lots to say about the evening.
“This was a lovely straatbraai,” he said.

“Every straatbraai is always special and unique, but this was something different. We quickly realised that the people of Angelica Road were very much in the mood to have a good time. They literally enjoyed every aspect of this evening. One of the highlights of the night was a turkey that arrived at the braai, that seemed to be a resident’s pet turkey. That was the next level.”
“Another highlight was Wynand’s painting being sold for R10 000 and an amazing sponsor Mosaiek that called in to donate money towards the restoration of Wynand’s 16-year-old son’s grave. That made everything extra special.

“My mom was another surprise. She has always been very curious as to what we do at a straatbraai, now she knows. This was definitely one for the books,” Van Heerden concluded.
Morne JK, the producer of the show has said that the Straatbraai is always a fun-filled event.
“People from all walks of life, and from all corners in Pretoria can send an email to straatbraai@jacarandafm.com to invite Rian and the Scenic Drive team to have a braai in their area. We get loads of invitations, but we usually look at areas where we haven’t been before and where we would like to meet new people,” he said.

The straatbraai takes place roughly twice a month but can change due to other event commitments and weather.
The straatbraai has taken place in some areas of Johannesburg and even the Lowveld too.

“People who attend the straatbraai are usually asked to bring their own camping chairs, their own drinks and anything else they might need. Jacaranda provides the fires, the entertainment and the vibe,” said Morne JK.
The location of the braai is carefully selected to prevent any traffic disruptions and it never takes place inside residential estates or complexes as they usually come with strict rules and regulations.
“The straatbraai usually has a guest or two, and some singers and DJs usually perform to keep people in the straatbraai mood. It’s very successful and so nice to see people from all backgrounds in the said suburb come together, mingle with neighbours and make new friends,” he concluded.
