Keep your cool in the heat

According to the South African weather service, the capital city would continue to endure temperatures soaring to 36°C until next weekend, with no substantial rainfall in sight.

Pretoria is set to melt this coming week, and residents are encouraged to stay indoors, as climbing into the fridge is not advised.

According to the South African weather service, the capital city would continue to endure temperatures soaring to 36°C until next weekend, with no substantial rainfall in sight.

The Tshwane metro has issued a statement urging residents to use water sparingly due to water levels in the city’s reservoirs dropping significantly. Because of the high temperatures, the city was struggling to keep up with the public water demand.

Spokesperson for Best-Care emergency services Xander Loubser warned against heat exhaustion that can lead to severe heatstroke. He said prevention was better than cure.

Loubser said the following were indications of heat stroke, which could be life-threatening: red flushes visible on the skin, cramps, heavy sweating, headaches or fever, nausea, loss of appetite and fainting.

He gave advice on what to do during the heat:

– Stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water.
– Avoid alcohol.
– Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children. Ensure they stay well hydrated too.
– Remember to ensure pets have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink.
– Try to stay out of direct sunlight.
– Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you use sunscreen.
– Do not overexert yourself, especially when you are outdoors.
– If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure that they are supervised while around and in the pool.
– Do not leave children and pets in a vehicle – not even with a window open.
