UPDATE: East cyclist back on wheels after attack

Former South African mountain bike master is back on his feet after he was stabbed several times during a robbery more than a month ago.

Former South African mountain bike master is back on his feet after he was stabbed several times during a robbery more than a month ago.

Wayne McDuling (55) was cycling in De Villebois Mareuil Drive at around 05:30 in September, to meet up with his cycling partners when four men attacked him and stole his bicycle near the NG church.

McDuling was stabbed with a knife, suffering several stab wounds to his arm, shoulders, and also fractured ribs.

He spent weeks in his Moreleta Park home recovering but said he was feeling much better and was ready to cycle again.

“I am on the road to recovery,” the high spirited cyclist said.

“I am still struggling with my ribs, which are taking a bit longer to heal, but I am much better.”

McDuling was admitted to the Pretoria East hospital’s high care unit and the doctors determined he had been stabbed six times and “lucky to be alive as a vital artery was narrowly missed”.

The father of three said he still had to undergo rehabilitation to regain full use of his shoulder and arms.

“I am glad to be alive. I am back to cycling again.

“I put on quite a fight,” he said about the day of the attack.

“Luckily my phone was not taken so I was able to call for help.”

Helmet company LivAll has donated to McDuling a smart helmet with safety features which allow cyclists to make contact during times of emergency.

“It has a panic button and the moment it detects a certain amount of impact it sends a message to three contacts and gives them your GPS coordinates,” he said.

“It’s absolutely amazing.”

McDuling’s four attackers were arrested following a joint-operation between private security as well as the local CPF launched at the Plastic View informal settlement.

The bicycle was also recovered.

The men face charges of attempted murder and robbery.

McDuling has thanked the people of Pretoria who have been sending messages of support on social media.
