Community initiative supports learners with winter school essentials
A community-driven donation campaign has provided school shoes and socks to needy learners, with organisers hoping the initiative improves confidence, school attendance and learning outcomes during the colder months.
Learners from Mogale Primary School in Mamelodi East have been donated brand new school shoes and socks to keep warm this winter.
The generous donation was made by a business owner to 50 learners who come from disadvantaged families on June 19.
Solomon Moloto from 333 Motor Spares said the learners received school shoes and socks as part of his drive to give back to the community of Mamelodi, on behalf of the motorists and the taxi drivers who support his business.
Moloto said this is not the first time he has donated to the children, and he wants to encourage other businessmen, including the taxi drivers, to come on board and help needy learners who desperately need school uniforms and shoes.
“It is sad to see a child walking to school without proper school shoes or barefoot, which exposes them to injury and infection,” said Moloto.
He added that these donations help to encourage learners to look forward to coming to school every day, knowing they are the same as the other learners, as it helps them to focus on their schoolwork.
“The learners are the future leaders of this country, and all they want is a helping hand and words of encouragement.”
“We are grateful to the school for allowing us to contribute towards the well-being of the learners,” he said.
“We brought the school shoes and socks for the learners who desperately need these shoes from the 2% percentage profit money from every item that is bought from our stores.”
He said this is not a once-off donation and they are planning to come back next year to do more for the school, especially in winter.
“We are calling on all other businessmen to come on board and partner with us, because we believe there
is a lot that needs to be done. These learners still need full school uniforms and food to eat after school, as most of the learners come from disadvantaged
backgrounds.”
Learners were encouraged to take their schoolwork seriously and strive to perform exceptionally well in their studies.
Violet Masango from Mogale Primary school thanked the Moloto for the generous donations.
Masango said the donations of school uniforms came just at the right time.
“We really appreciate the support, and the learners will benefit a lot. A happy child is a successful child.”
She said giving is a good sign of love and also teaches their learners to give.
“We are pleading with the community to continue supporting Moloto’s business.
“We have learners who come from disadvantaged families, and these donations will uplift the spirit of learners,” said Masango.
