Plastic View soccer match honours late CPF chairperson

Plastic View informal settlement residents gathered around a soccer field to support their respective teams during a match at the weekend.

Plastic View informal settlement residents gathered around a soccer field to support their respective teams during a match at the weekend.

The match, played on Sunday, was in recognition of Garsfontein CPF chairperson Dan van Ryneveld who passed away following a short illness a few weeks ago.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Dan”, he was actively involved in the Plastic View community and participated in various projects to uplift and help those in need.

“People close to him described him as a true gentleman,” said Garsfontein police spokesperson Michael Nel.

“He was a kind man with a big heart who was driven to help people and knew how to motivate others to get the work done.”

Dan’s wife June, his daughter Ashton, Garsfontein police station commander Colonel Kervin Solomons, as well as members of the station, were among the guests who attended the soccer match.

A trophy named after Dan was donated by the Thuso-Help foundation in honour of his community work and involvement.

His wife, June van Ryneveld, handed over the trophy to the winning team.

Local pastor Toye Abioye said the match was meant to unite the Plastic View community to stand together against crime.

“We have established 10 soccer teams to participate in a tournament,” he said.

“People socialise and interact with one another when playing soccer and in the process, they get to know each other and learn to respect each other.”

When we unite people on the soccer field we also unite them as residents and then we can stand together against crime.

Colonel Solomons welcomed the soccer game organised by the residents.

“When the police and community work together we can significantly increase our chances of success,” he said.
