Cheers erupted through Laerskool Magalieskruin hall on Friday, when everyone’s beloved Blue Bull and Springbok rugby player, Bryan Habana, stepped out from behind the stage to address the assembly.

Two young sportsmen were being honoured during the ceremony for their leadership and sporting abilities. Hosted by Pick n Pay in partnership with Mastercard, Marco van Baalen of Hoërskool Montana and Phillip du Plessis of Laerskool Magalieskruin were awarded ‘Hero Awards’ for their tireless dedication to the game of rugby.

Van Baalen, who captains the Hoëskool Montana U/15A rugby team, was described as a true leader by his coach Jan Cloete.

“Both on and off the field, he diligently attends the school’s rugby matches, staying for every game even if he isn’t playing,” said Cloete.

“And since the beginning of his high school career, he’s never missed a single practice regardless if he is ill or injured.”

Du Plessis received praise from Laerskool Magalieskruin deputy headmaster Johan van Rooyen for representing the school with pride as their first team rugby captain.

“He was also captain of our first cricket team this year,” Van Rooyen stated. “Not only does he excel in sports, he is also one of our academic top 10 learners in grade 7.”

The two award winners beamed as Habana pinned their Hero Award badges to their school attire before giving the young learners an inspirational speech on how to achieve their dreams through focus and determination.

Habana was elected Mastercard ambassador for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, which gave him the opportunity to accompany the Springboks to Japan where he watched a proud captain Siyamthanda Kolisi lift the World Cup trophy.

“For me to have been there, to watch history being made by Siya and the Springboks, was absolutely priceless,” Habana told the audience.

“Standing here in your school hall, seeing the school values of honesty, respect, caring and hard work displayed here, I also identify with those values not just in rugby, but every other aspect of my life. So my advice to you, is to put those four values together to make your mark in the future.”
