VIDEO: ‘Ray of sunshine’ girl’s mother grateful to community

Sharlon Aphane was walking home from school last week Tuesday with her mother, Maria, on the Delmas and Barnard intersection when the accident happened.

The mother of a Laerskool Elardus Park learner (10), who was killed after being hit by a vehicle, is grateful to members of the community who went the extra mile to support her following the death of her daughter.

Sharlon Aphane was walking home from school last week Tuesday with her mother, Maria, on the Delmas and Barnard intersection when the accident happened.

Her death left many members of the community in shock with some describing her as a ray of sunshine and others offering to help the family financially.

Maria said while she was “drowning in sorrow” at the loss of her child, members of the community and the school were her pillar of strength.

“We have so much gratitude to all the personnel involved in trying to save her life and each and every person who has been here for us during this time.”

The grade 3 learner was known for her “angelic” voice that saw her singing for the school choir.

She died only two months after her tenth birthday.

“My heart is broken and I am left with many questions and feeling so confused,” Maria said.

“Sharlon was such a bright and talented girl with big dreams of seeing the world.”

“She loved to sing in her school choir and had the voice of an angel. She had so much love for everyone and was very popular.”

On the day of the incident, Netcare 911 and other paramedics rushed to the scene and found the girl with injuries to the head, chest, pelvis and legs.
