No corners cut during clean-up

Metro cleans up abandoned substation in the west of Pretoria.

The corner of Van der Hoff Road and Schurmanns Avenue has finally been ridden of the filth caused by so-called “street recyclers” that occupied an abandoned substation at the intersection.

Members of Tshwane metro police and a team of contract cleaners from Solid Waste spent the morning of 28 November cleaning the area and deemed the operation successful.

According to ward councillor Elma Nel, neither the City nor Telkom have claimed ownership of said substation, which has been left abandoned in recent years.

“This was an absolute eyesore and the neighbours’ safety were compromised by vagrants burning stolen electrical cables next to the substation’s brick wall,” said Nel.

“I am truly grateful for the swift response by metro police and the Solid Waste team. They were able to remove the illegal dwelling next to the substation and secure the area again,” Nel continued.

She urged the community follow the correct procedures when reporting complaints.

“Residents should phone the City of Tshwane on 080-111-1556. This toll free number is available free of charge for all residents to report complaints. We’ve tested it from a pay-as-you-go phone with zero airtime and your call still goes through,” Nel stated.

Alternatively, Nel said residents can call 012-358-9999 or email CustomerCare@Tshwane.gov.za.

“Pretoria West residents should be responsible by always keeping this information and contact details on hand when reporting municipal issues,” Nel said in conclusion.

“This will assist us in making sure that all matters are seen to in a swift and timely fashion.”
