Repairs under way at Centurion golf course after 2019 floods

The damage was also caused to various riverbanks and bridges, so much so that one of the bridges was washed away during the floods.

Some of the heaviest floods yet in Centurion damaged some of the Irene Country Club’s greens and infrastructure in December 2019.

A large body of water penetrated the pump house which damaged the pumps and filtration system situated on the 14th hole of the course. The damage to the pump house contributed to many of the challenges the course was now dealing with on the greens.

The greens underwent a large amount of heat stress during the week of 14-19 December 2019.

With no access to pumped water, the greenkeeping team manually wet the greens to try to protect the roots as best as possible. The pumps were repaired by December 20.

The five greens that suffered the most stress were the 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th and 16th due to the amount of silt that was deposited on them during the flood.

Chairman of Irene Country Club, Richard Reynolds, said damage was also caused to various riverbanks and bridges, so much so that one of the bridges was washed away during the floods.

“All the necessary quotes are being sourced and Irene Country Club is awaiting final confirmation from suppliers, as soon as they open for operation,” said Reynolds.

Where to from here?

A verti-draining process was done on all the greens to allow for water penetration to the roots on December 26 and the biggest challenge was having to wait one week to assess the extent of the damage.

The bad news for patrons is that five of the greens have to be redone completely.

“We are finalising the process through consultation with industry experts and are pushing to start the repair process this week,” Reynolds said.
