Scores of twins at Centurion primary school
"Our teachers are ready for 2020 and we are very excited about the coming developments at the school"

A Centurion primary school is boasting with 33 pairs of twins and a set of triplets.
Laerskool Wierdapark has a long tradition of celebrating a high number of twins, according to school principal Louis Dekker.
“The tradition of celebrating high numbers of twins at the school was started by the former principal, Mr Johan Maree,” Dekker said.
Maree had been inspired by a newspaper article advertised on a streetlight pole during his time at Laerskool Wierdapark.
Ever since spotting the article, Maree urged his teachers to take note of how many twins were attending the school and the tradition lives on to this day.

“We really enjoy keeping Mr Maree’s tradition alive by keeping track of how many twins we have enrolled,” Dekker said.
“This year we have a very high number of twins as well as the triplets.”
The twins range in ages with five of the pairs in grade 7 and two pairs of twins in grade R.
“Many of the twins are placed in separate classrooms,” Dekker said.

“We believe this allows them to gain some independence. Many of our grade 7 twins are also heading to separate high schools next year.”
Of the five pairs of twins in grade 7 at the school, only one pair will attend the same high school next year.
“Our theme for this year is regaining respect,” Dekker said.
“We want to reintroduce a culture of greeting others and showing them respect. Respect for each other and our elders.”
“We find that this respect shown at the school goes beyond our grounds and influences our community.”

The grade 7 twins all agreed that they were looking forward to the coming year but were also interested in heading to high school next year.
Laerskool Wierdapark has about 1 650 learners and 170 faculty and staff.
“Our teachers are ready for 2020 and we are very excited about the coming developments at the school,” Dekker said.
“We recently installed a synthetic sports field at the school which can be used for a number of sports.”
