Sweet Easter joy for orphans

The initiative by The Aqua Martina Lifesaving swimming club was part of their annual community outreach project.

Approximately 63 orphans at the President Kruger Children’s Home in Pretoria were treated to cooldrinks, ice cream, sweets and chips at the Deon Malherbe Swimming Pool tuck shop for Easter last week.

The initiative was by The Aqua Martina Lifesaving swimming club as part of their annual community outreach project.

Martina van den Bout, owner and head coach of the club, said profits from the snack shop are annually used to contribute to the fees of the club members participating in the Lifesaving South Africa National Championships.

This year Lifesaving South Africa (LSA) had no choice but to cancel the championships in Port Elizabeth for the end of March 2020 due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

“As a result, and the fact that municipal swimming pools where closed by the Tshwane metro to curb the spread of the virus, the lifesaving season ended much sooner than anticipated which left the club with excess stock in its snack shop,” said Van den Bout.

Van den Bout obtained permission from the Sinoville police to allow Mias Smit from the children’s home to collect the donation.

“Easter symbolises life. In lifesaving we all, young and all, stand inside the circle united as one through good times and bad times. The club is grateful to be able to make a difference to the lives of children who are less fortunate than our own,” concluded Van den Bout.
