Mobile toilets for Tshwane’s informal settlements

Administrator Lefadi Makibinyane said the metro was already providing and servicing 3 296 toilets to its informal settlements.

The Tshwane metro will distribute more than 2 000 toilets to its informal settlement during the Covid-19 outbreak.

This is according to Administrator Lefadi Makibinyane who said a total of 3 296 toilets were already being provided to informal settlement throughout the metro.

“We requested a total of 2 334 chemical toilets, including replacements, and received 502 chemical toilets with 1 840 chemical toilets still outstanding,” he said.

“The service provider indicated that she has received 600 chemical toilets which the city will use during the implementation of de-densification plan which will resume during the beginning of May.”

He said when all outstanding deliveries are made, the Tshwane metro would be providing 5 136 chemical toilets to the informal settlements and that the toilets will be serviced twice a week by the appointed service providers.

The metro also has a total of 969 water tanks servicing all the informal settlements to help people practice hygiene and help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Schools in areas such as Hammanskraal, known to have a historical problem with the quality of water, would receive 37 of the 2 500 litre tankers delivered by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

“Access to water is a basic human right and a key component in the fight against the deadly virus which has already claimed more than 100 South Africans,” he said.

“We are grateful to an organisation that donated 40 000 litres of borehole in region 2. The trucks will be filling water from this borehole during the lockdown period,” he said.

The Department of Water and Sanitation also delivered 327 of the 5 000 litres water tanks and 102 of the 10 000 litres water tanks.

Makibinyane said the provision of water would ensure that destitute residents were able to wash their hands in order to curb the spread of the virus.
