Police birthday surprise for East teen
On the morning of Layla's birthday, she was surprised by a convoy of police and security vehicles that drove past her house and set off their sirens to wish her a happy birthday.
Garsfontein police took a break from fighting crime to help make a teenage girl’s birthday extra special recently.
Police surprised Layla de Andrade (18) with a special sirens shout out birthday drive-by at her house in Garsfontein on 27 April.
Layla’s mother, Leilanie, told Rekord she had to think out of the box to make her daughter’s 18th birthday special after her original plans to celebrate her big birthday were shattered by lockdown regulations.
She was meant to go skydiving at the Wonderboom airport for her birthday, but that had to be cancelled, Leilanie said.
Leilanie said she realised that after the lockdown was extended that all arrangements for her daughter’s big celebration were on the rocks.

Leilanie said a friend suggested she approach the police for help. I phoned my local police station and they were super helpful and immediately referred me to someone who could assist me.

My daughter was blown away and asked me afterwards how I managed to pull it off, Leilanie said.
The surprise did not end there.
Layla was further spoiled with a birthday cake and a special birthday wish video of 30 minutes from friends, family and a handful of celebs including Dewald Wasserval, Appel, Jake White and Victor Matfield.

If we can make things better for them then that is the silver lining to this dark cloud.

Leilanie said she was grateful to the Garsfontein police station, Colonel Solomons and Captain Doubell who went out of their way to make the birthday memorable.
This is what serving your community in difficult and unknown times means.
I can’t thank them enough for the priceless experience. Garsfontein police station and everyone involved, we salute you!
