Top schools in Pretoria welcome matrics despite re-scheduled date

Local schools such as Hoërskool Waterkloof and Die Hoërskool Menlopark, however, welcomed back their matric class of 2020 on Monday despite the re-schedule.

Some schools in the east of Pretoria took in learners on Monday morning, while other schools did not.

Learners eager to go back to these schools would have to wait until next week Monday.

This after the Department of Education announced its plan to postpone the return of learners to 8 June.

Local schools such as Hoërskool Waterkloof and Die Hoërskool Menlopark, however, welcomed back their matric class of 2020 on Monday despite the re-schedule.

Laerskool Constantiapark headmaster Dr Louis Dey said his school’s management team and staff were ready to return as soon as they got the greenlight from the department.

“We have started a CP cube school and have been producing video lessons for the past eight weeks. The lessons are available to parents on three platforms,” Dey said.

“The lessons form part of the curriculum and provide explanations and practice with worksheets and additional tools.

“Our slogan for the past eight weeks were ‘be safe and cheerful’. In this unique times, it was our focus to inspire Rooikatte with a positive mindset, one where we clearly show that we do what we can within the confines of empowerment. Everybody’s safety is paramount to us.

“All safety protocols are in place to ensure the safe return of our pupils and teachers. We adhered to the instructions given,” concluded Dey.

Hoërskool Waterkloof headmaster Chris Denysschen posted a video on the school’s Facebook page on Sunday saying “Hoërskool Waterkloof was ready to welcome the matric learners on Monday”.

Shortly after the announcement, Waterkloof created a post on social media informing parents that matric learners are expected back on Monday.

Waterkloof welcomed about 400 learners on Monday.

Learners’ temperatures were tested, their hands were sanitised and face masks were handed out.

Administrative personnel returned last week Monday and teachers on Wednesday.

Demarcated areas were allocated as drop-off points for learners.

Learners will again use hand sanitiser as soon as they entered classrooms and were expected to wipe their tables with wipes.

Meanwhile, a teacher at Laerskool Menlopark has tested positive for Covid-19.

This means the school, which had been evacuated and disinfected, would only open on 15 June.

According to school principal Pieter Bredenkamp, all staff have been tested.

“All protocols were in place to keep teachers safe for the past week,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the school will not be able to re-open on Monday. For the safety of our teachers and children, strict and strict action must be taken. Once the school has been disinfected and declared safe, schooling will begin. The prescribed isolation period is two weeks.”
