Elderly people receive masks and hand sanitiser
These will help keep elderly people safe and protected from the coronavirus.
A local home for the elderly received a generous donation of masks and hand sanitisers to keep residents safe during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Evah Mokwape foundation, in partnership with Vista Mamelodi Alumni Relief project, handed over the donation to the Mamelodi old-age home last Friday.
Evah Mokwape, founder of the foundation and former vice-captain of Banyana Banyana soccer team, said she felt they needed to do something for the elderly people of Mamelodi.
Mokwape said she approached Vista Mamelodi Alumni Relief project to help keep the elderly people safe and protected from the coronavirus.
They donated washable masks, disposal masks, bleach and soap.
Mokwape said they decided to donate disposal masks for elderly people to use when they go for check-ups at the local clinics.
“My heart was broken to hear that we were the first organisation to visit the home since the lockdown started,? she said.
“We have so many businessmen in Mamelodi and we plead with them to come on board and help the elderly. We need to take care of the elderly because their immune systems are much weaker than ours.”
She said the elderly had a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience that could benefit society.
“It’s important to acknowledge our senior citizens and the contribution that they are making to our society,” said Mokwape.
“We must not forget the elderly just because they are at a safe home. They also need to be visited by their loved ones and, most importantly, shown love at all times.”
The Evah Mokwape foundation started in 2017 to help young upcoming stars in different sporting arenas as well as help the community with societal issues.
Dorothy Dikhali, centre manager of Mamelodi old-age home, said they were grateful for the generous donation which had “come at the right time”.
“They have provided us with some much-needed essentials to combat the spread of the virus.”
Mokwape encouraged the elderly to continue adhering to the lockdown regulations and to stay safe at all times.
