Challenges facing children’s home during the lockdown
Child Welfare Tshwane needs your help during this difficult time.

Child Welfare Tshwane has come a long way during the nationwide lockdown. Like many other institutions it depends heavily upon the goodwill of others.
Challenges facing Child Welfare Tshwane and one of its subdivisions, the Bramley Children’s Home in Groenkloof, was the lack of assistance when it comes to schoolwork.
Franca Surendorff, personal assistant to Linda Nell, the managing director of Child Welfare Tshwane, told Rekord that although there was an increase in domestic violence and a shortage of food and clothing, schoolwork was probably the biggest challenge facing housemothers and caregivers during this time.
“We have approximately 46 children in our care who are divided in three houses. It’s really challenging to have only one housemother who is on 24-hour duty, to assist all these kids of different ages with their schoolwork. We would really appreciate some volunteers with regards to this,” Surendorff said.
Surendorff also spoke about the dire need of food parcels and clothes as many people have lost their jobs during the lockdown.
“Many parents who house foster children or parents who depend on our assistance have lost their jobs and now need additional help with basic necessities.”
Child Welfare Tshwane also implemented some very stringent hygiene practices to protect all children in their care.
“Our cleaning staff returned to work at the beginning of May, so we sanitise and properly clean all surfaces on a daily basis. People who come in and out of our facilities are monitored and permits issued. Each division of Child Welfare Tshwane also implemented a sick ward where any child who may contract the virus will be isolated.”
Surendorff confirmed that Child Welfare Tshwane’d driver would pick up any donations to limit the risk of spreading the virus to the children.
“Please feel free to contact us if you would like to assist in any form, make a donation or have any enquiries,” Surendorff said.
