Riviera locals help retirement home
This was not the first time residents assisted an old age home in the Moot during the national lockdown.
In the Moot, several residents and organisations have done their bit in helping out people affected by the national lockdown.
In Parker Street, Riviera residents did the same when they saw a need at a local old age home in the area.
“We saw that the old age home, Ons Tuis Retirement Home, was in need of help,” said a resident of the street, Thys Potgieter.
“Residents in our street created a WhatsApp group so we could stay in contact and I asked on it whether they were willing to help assist the old age home.”
“They agreed, we got very positive feedback and we started to gather donations.”
Potgieter said they phoned the old age home beforehand to find out what they needed.
“They said they needed equipment like gloves and masks, but they also needed hygiene and beauty products, like deodorant and shampoo,” he said.
He said his wife also gathered donations from her side.

“From my wife’s side, she was able to raise about R3 000 in cash donations,” he said.
“Residents also brought donations from their side and we could deliver much-needed goods to the home.”
Potgieter said the donations were delivered at the old age home last week.
He said they would continue to support the home.
“We are going to try and do this on a regular basis, depending on the donations we receive and what we are able to buy ourselves,” he said.
Potgieter thanked everyone who assisted with donations and added that any more donations were welcome.
Anyone wanting to help, could contact Potgieter at 082-376-0319.

Earlier last month, MCS Security gave out masks at Huis Vergenoeg in Waverley.
MCS spokesperson Reinhard Raschke previously said the masks were made by various women in the community for free and distributed to the needy.
