Police recover stolen truck in east with cargo valued to R4.5 million

The police who arrested a 57- year-old man in possession of a hijacked vehicle and suspected stolen goods.

Police have arrested one suspect after they were tipped off about a suspected stolen truck in Mamelodi East.

Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said the arrest came after a swift response by the police who arrested a 57- year-old man in possession of a hijacked vehicle and suspected stolen goods on Saturday morning.

“Members of Tracker spotted a suspicious-looking white truck marked with RTT branding driving around Nellmapius escorted by other vehicles,” said Mashiloane.

They immediately called the police who quickly responded to the call.

“The police stopped the truck and found the driver was not in possession of essential work permit,” said Mashiloane.

The RTT control room was contacted and confirmed that the Middleburg branch was robbed by 14 heavily armed men earlier the same evening.

“The hijacked truck was loaded with electronic equipment which was later valued by RTT staff and estimated to be around R4.5-million,” said Mashiloane.

Police also found false number plates in the truck.

The suspects who were escorting the truck in four vehicles fled the scene and were still at large.

Mashiloane said the police will continue with the investigations that can lead to the arrested of the suspects who fled the scene.

The arrested man was due to appear before the Mamelodi magistrate’s court on charges of hijacking and possession of stolen goods.

Mamelodi East police station commander Terrence Naidoo commended members for the “wonderful role they play in the community following the swift response”.

“It is our constitutional mandate to fight crime but it so overwhelming to have positive members who respond swiftly to put effort in eradicating crimes in our community.”

The police pleaded with the public to assist with any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects who fled the scene by phoning the station on 012-815-7079 or dial 08600-10111.
