Another Tshwane EMS station shut after Covid-19 case.

Tshwane emergency services has had to close its Hazelwood station on Pinaster street after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

Tshwane emergency services has had to close its Hazelwood station (Station 18) on Pinaster street after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.

This is the third station known to Rekord to close since the start of the pandemic.

“The member of staff reported to the supervisor that she would not be reporting for duty on Sunday 15 June, as she was not feeling well,” said spokesperson Charles Mabaso.

“She then consulted her doctor on Monday 15 June, where she took a Covid 19 test.”

Mabaso said the doctor informed the staff member of her results on Friday and she immediately informed her supervisor.

Management ordered the closure of the station, arranged for sanitising, which was done on the same day, of the station building and emergency response resources and the deep cleaning of the station, which a service provider will carry out on Monday.

“The staff member wore appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) daily,” he said.

“The PPE stock availability was continuously being monitored to ensure that the frontline staff were always protected.”

He said the infected staff member was trained on correct use of PPE and on the disease itself.

“The rest of the staff working the same shift with the said member were tested today, 20 June 2020 and are in isolation, pending their test results.

“All contacts will be traced and managed accordingly as per the Department of Health guidelines.”

Mabaso said the department would continue to take all precautionary measures to protect its most important asset – valuable staff as well as residents – who look up to it for a diligent and professional service.

“The City has a comprehensive workplace Covid-19 management plan which is backed by expertly advised protocols and guidelines,” he said, adding that the department would continue to respond to all emergency incidents reported in the areas covered by the closed station from surrounding fire stations.

“The department would like to apologise in advance, in instances where response times may be affected as a result of the closure of Station 18. All life-threatening emergencies must be reported on the City’s toll free 107 emergency number.”

A week ago Station 4 in Silverton was temporarily closed after a staff member also tested positive for Covid-19.

In May its disaster management centre (Pieter Delport centre) also closed after two employees tested positive for the virus.
