East community unite to revive vandalised centre
Youths joined the community and members of South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) to clean up the damaged building.
Mamelodi East residents celebrated youth month by reviving a vandalised community centre.
Youths joined the community and members of South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) to clean up the damaged building last week Thursday.
One of the organisers, Martin Tlhako, said the community centre that was damaged was utilised by Stanza Bopape residents and extension 5 residents.
“It was vandalised several times since its inception by the community over service delivery frustrations,” said Tlhako.
The community joined forces and came with cleaning equipment to clean the centre.
The centre also needs repairing of broken windows and replacing of missing doors.
“Many protests actions over service delivery, especially load shedding, ended in damage to public property,” said Tlhako.

The centre used to serve as nerve-point for community issues, including reports of child-headed homes and whistle-blowers in crime-related issues.
Tlhako said the cleaning campaign was not politically motivated and factional issues that seeks to demoralise their unity and common goals were set aside.
Sanco member Louis Mashego, who also took part, motivated the community and youth to unite for the sake of community progress.
He pleaded for donors and sponsors from businesses around Mamelodi to contribute towards the re-establishment of the wrecked office.
“We are asking for furniture donations, the fixing of damaged windows, rebuilding of damaged interior walls, bricks and cements from local business, which will strongly highlight the social investment by our local business,” he said.
Anyone who wished to help with donations may contact Martin Tlhako, organising secretary of Sanco on 066-439-8996.
