Elderly man recovering after north smallholding attack

Son of brutally assaulted 73-year-old man shares details of the attack.

An elderly man from the north of Pretoria is recovering after he was attacked on his smallholding on Thursday evening.

The attack, which happened at around 22:30, was previously reported on by Rekord.

Koos Janse van Rensburg (73) had just gone to sleep at his smallholding in Kiewiet Street, Haakdoornboom when he woke to found two men in his bedroom.

“The men, one tall and one short, had switched on the light, waking my father,” said Janse van Rensburg’s son, Koos Junior.

“They then proceeded to demand money from him. My father said the tall man spoke with a “high English accent”.

“When my father said he didn’t have any money with him, they started beating him. They hit him with their fists.

“The men then fled the scene with his plasma television and some other electrical appliances.”

Janse van Rensburg, who lives alone, managed to call his son who rushed to his aid.

The police and local CPF were called to the scene.

“I called an ambulance and paramedics took my father to the Eugene Marais hospital where he was treated for his injuries.”

Koos Junior said a similar attack had happened the very same night at another smallholding nearby.

“My father isn’t one to stay in hospital long. He is recovering and doing well.”

The Pretoria North area has been hit by a spate of violent crimes recently which has led to calls for action from the local community.

The area was hit by seven attacks on smallholdings in a 15km radius within a mere 24 hours earlier this week on Tuesday to Wednesday.
