Local school receive 200 masks

The protective masks were handed out to grade 7 learners and teachers at the school to limit the spread of Covid-19.

About 200 masks were donated to Emasangweni Primary School learners in Mamelodi East last week Monday.

This after months of home schooling and e-learning, South African learners in their final years of primary and high school, have finally been given the go-ahead to return to class as the Covid-19 lockdown was eased.

The generous donations were made by six Exxaro employees who donated the hand-made masks last week when the school reopened.

Exxaro spokesperson Mzila Mthenjane said six of their employees donated the masks.

The protective masks were handed out to grade 7 learners and teachers at the school to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The school also has strict health and safety protocols in place.

“The mask donation marks one of the many ways Exxaro is investing in education and giving back to their host communities,” said Mthenjane.

In 2019, the mining group spent R28-million on education initiatives, including the sponsorship of university research chairs, academic programmes and infrastructure development for basic education.

“As a corporate citizen of our country, we strive to be a key partner in national risk mitigation. We are dedicated to our nation and working tirelessly to ensure the survival and growth of our people.

“This donation was only a small contribution from a few Exxaro employees. Imagine the kind of impact we could have if we all joined hands to empower South Africa when it matters the most. Let us be the change we want to see in Africa, and beyond.”

The company will also be sharing several volunteer programmes throughout the year that their employees can take part in, with the hopes of making a difference in the lives of local children.

“This is not the first time Exxaro helped us,” said school principal Maiphephi Ndhlahla.

According to Ndhlahla, the company previously supported the school through the Partners for Possibility programme.
