NEWSFLASH: Two unharmed in Wonderboom helicopter accident

“The pilots suffered no injuries and as per standard procedure they were taken to the doctor on the airport for evaluation.”

An instructor and a student walked away unharmed after a helicopter accident at the Wonderboom Airport in the north of Pretoria during a training session on Tuesday morning.

Powered Flight helicopter pilot training centre CEO Martin Jacobs said the exact cause of the accident was not known, as the South African Civil Aviation Authority has yet to investigate.

He said at the time of the accident, an instructor was conducting advanced autorotation training in which the trainee pilot goes through the procedures to land a helicopter.

“Within seconds the crash alarm sounded and seconds later the emergency services vehicles left the airport fire station. The pilots suffered no injuries. As per standard procedure, they were taken to the doctor on the airport for evaluation.”

“I’m relieved that the pilots were not injured; sad to see a damaged helicopter; relieved that the pilots followed correct procedures and thankful to the air traffic control, airport fire department, airport management and my own competent staff who held everything together during such a crisis.”

He said from the lack of damage to the helicopter’s landing gear, it showed that the pilot did a “very gentle” landing.
