Young cyclist injured by truck

"Wynand phoned me that morning to tell me he had been in an accident and that he could not move his arm."

A 23-year-old man from the west of Pretoria lived to tell the tale after he was injured by a truck while cycling to his workplace in Centurion this week.

Wynand van der Westhuizen was injured by the truck, which fled the scene, on Monday morning.

“He was cycling down an off-ramp in Eeufees Street when the truck overtook him,” his mother, Anna van der Westhuizen, told Rekord.

Apparently his jacket got caught on the ‘edge’ of the truck and it dragged him behind it Van der Westhuizen said she wasn’t sure how far the truck dragged her son before he got loose and it drove off, leaving him behind.

“Wynand phoned me that morning to tell me he had been in an accident and that he could not move his arm.”

Van der Westhuizen rushed to the scene where she found her son on the side of the road being attended to by Cert-SA paramedics.

Fortunately, Wynand only sustained moderate injuries as his shoulder was dislocated by the fall. He was taken to hospital, where X-rays were taken and he was discharged three days later. Van der Westhuizen said they are looking for any eyewitnesses on the day to help locate the driver of the truck.

“Wynand only partially saw the truck’s number plate, but he said it was one of the new ones with letters and numbers in it.”

Van der Westhuizen said Wynand was still in pain from the accident.

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma confirmed the incident.

“A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened,” said Huma.

“The case is still under investigation.”
