North girl with ear drum problems suffers setback

Although the hearing in Larochelle’s left ear seemed to fine after last year’s surgery, the Bam family knew that she would probably have to undergo a follow-up operation.

The Montana girl suffering a serious inner ear problem has recently experienced a setback despite a “successful” operation last year.

Larochelle Bam was diagnosed with a cholesteatoma in July 2019, when an “ear infection” did not clear up.

She was diagnosed with cholesteatoma and underwent a three-hour operation to reconstruct her ear drum.

At the beginning of this year, the Bam family hoped Larochelle’s ear problems would be a thing of the past.

However, Leechelle Bam took her daughter to Kloof hospital on 22 June for a follow-up examination after dark puss started forming inside the ear.

The doctor drilled out the cholesteatoma and implanted the new eardrum.

“Black wax ran out of Larochelle’s ear. The doctor examined her ear and saw half of her eardrum was damaged. He said the cholesteatoma was back,” Leechelle said on Facebook last week.

Larochelle is currently being treated for an acute infection for 10 days, after which she will need to go to hospital to undergo another CT scan to plan surgery for radical mastoidectomy.

Leechelle told Rekord at the beginning of the year that her daughter would have to undergo another surgery because the ear had started to cause problems.

Larochelle’s parents raised more than R80 000 for the first operation to pay for the mastoidectomy that took place on 25 September.

They then joined hands with a local charity, Caring Daisies, to raise money for the operation.

When Larochelle and her mother visited Kloof Hospital a doctor said Larochelle’s hearing was 100 percent.

Although the hearing in Larochelle’s left ear seemed to fine after last year’s surgery, the Bam family knew that she would probably have to undergo a follow-up operation.

The operation would have been to implant a prosthetic device in her ear, but would be put on ice as a result of the infection to treat the cholesteatoma first.
