NEWSFLASH: East jogger injured during attempted mugging

Joggers are urged to always be aware of their surroundings.

A jogger was injured when he was run over by a vehicle following an attempted robbery in Lynnwood Glen on Wednesday morning.

According to Brinant spokesperson Erick Becker, the jogger was approached by two men in a vehicle.

“Despite attempts to ignore the vehicle the jogger was followed until they started to drive aggressively towards him and rammed him with their vehicle.”

Becker said the men tried to steal the jogger’s cellphone but failed.

“The resident sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital to get checked out by Vemru and Emer-G-Med.”

Becker urged joggers to always be aware of their surroundings.

“Be on the lookout for suspicious people, vehicles or activities. Although this might do nothing to stop the muggers from pouncing, it may just give you an edge or a couple of minutes head start to prepare you for what’s coming,” he said.

Becker also advised joggers to avoid listening to music as this can be a distraction.

“It is exactly this type of scenario that often gives muggers or robbers the opportunity required to launch a surprise attack.”

He also warned people wearing jewellery or carrying valuables with them when they exercise.

“Do not use shortcuts as criminals often hide in dark, deserted areas. Open veld areas are inhabited by vagrants, beggars or other dangerous people. Most importantly though, if you are accosted by a criminal, hand over your possessions and do not make eye contact. Your life is more valuable than any material item so keep a cool head and let common sense dictate,” Becker concluded.
