Moot resident warns over recent dog poisonings

"There have been three cases in the last week and a half, that I am aware of, especially in the Rietfontein area”

Residents of the Moot are concerned about a recent spike in dog poisonings in the area.

“There have been three cases in the last week and a half, that I am aware of, especially in the Rietfontein area,” said a resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

She said two of their three dogs have died from dog poisoning.

While the third dog also ingested poison, they were able to save him, she said.

“The criminals threw meat over the wall that contained ‘two-step poison’,” she said.

“We have confirmed this with our veterinarian. It is frightening because a bag of this type of poison costs only R10 on the street and one teaspoon can kill up to three dogs.”

She said after the dogs were poisoned, criminals usually targeted motorcycles.

“At our house and at another house, motorcycles were stolen,” she said.

“They [criminals] poison the dogs and then they simply attack the property.”

The resident said she was heartbroken over the two dogs that died.

“They are like our children,” she said.

She said she did not open a case at the police station, but wanted to create awareness.

“If the dogs bark, go and see immediately if there is a problem,” she said.

“Be prepared for this type of crime and do not leave property lying around in the yard. It attracts criminals.”

Reinhard Raschke of MCS Security said he agreed that this type of crime was on the rise, adding that there were seven cases reported last week.

“These cases of dog poisoning have been reported especially in the Gezina area,” he said.

Raschke encouraged residents to keep their dogs as far away as possible in their back yard and to go inspect if the dogs bark.

“No dog barks for nothing,” he warned.

Kilnerpark Security spokeswoman Ancelize van der Kooi said they were only aware of one case of dog poisoning.

However, she said that there was a possibility that this type of crime could start to rise again.

“With the national lockdown now eased, criminals are looking for various ways to commit crime,” she said.

Van der Kooi encouraged all residents to be prepared.

Pretoria Moot police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt said no cases were reported at the police station.

Captain Coba Brits of the Villieria police station said one case was reported.

“I would not say that this crime is increasing in the area,” she said.
