Tshwane working on licence centre backlogs, system issues
“No penalties will be placed. Those licences that expired during lockdown will be extended for 90 days till end of August.”

The Tshwane metro said this week, it was working on licence centre backlogs and other issues.
Residents have been complaining about their struggles in getting appointments to renew their licence cards as well as applying for learners tests and the registration and licensing of motor vehicles.
“It is a nightmare,” a resident, who wanted to stay anonymous, told Rekord.
“I have been struggling to get slots for myself and my son for more than a month now.”
The resident said they could not get a one-time PIN number.
“The service is beyond ridiculous.”
Licensing centres across the country resumed operations under level 3 lockdown on 1 June, while Tshwane opened four business days later, due to logistical glitches.
The metro has since been fighting licensing backlogs due to lockdown regulations and recent system glitches.
Two metro licence centres have since been closed for three days due to reported cases of Covid-19.
Last month, the metro extended operational days at all its licensing centres.
“We are working on interventions to assist residents,” said Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
He said the metro had recently also introduced extended weekend service on certain Sundays to address the backlog.
“More centres will be launched across the city soon to ensure acceleration of services.”
He said residents should not worry over late licence renewals.
“No penalties will be placed. Those licences that expired during lockdown will be extended for 90 days till end of August.”
He urged residents to make sure the correct cell number was captured and avoid using email addresses if they didn’t have any Internet connection.
“The one-time PIN will always be sent to your email address or valid cell phone number. The system is operating effectively.”
Bokaba said the metro was operating normally, although with a reduced workforce.
He said since resumption, the metro had renewed 15 130 driving licences as of the end of June.
