Local organisation receives protective gear for Covid-19 pandemic
"We have identified six hotspots in Mamelodi and we are helping the less fortunate, homeless and drug users including hostel dwellers."
The Mokwape Foundation donated masks and hand sanitiser to keep the front-line volunteers of the Thandanani Drop Inn centre safe during the lockdown.
Evah Mokwape, founder of the foundation and former vice-captain of the Banyana Banyana squad, said she felt they needed to do something for the organisation which feeds needy families.
Mokwape said they joined forces with MTN to donate the masks and sanitiser.
She said these supplies will help volunteers from the organisation stay healthy while helping the community during the Covid-19 pandemic.
They also donated washable masks, disposable masks, bleach and soaps.
Mokwape said they also donated the personal protective equipment (PPE), food parcels and toiletries to the Gauteng North Mental Health Society.
She pleaded with businessmen in Mamelodi to come on board and help the foundation.
“We need to take care for the people who are on the coronavirus front-line,” she said.
Thabo Kgotsi, from the Thandanani centre, said the donations came at a time it desperately needed PPE.
“We had a shortage of PPE and we had to postpone some community projects because of that,” said Kgotsi.
He added that some of the PPE will be donated to community members, especially the homeless and drug addicts.
Eva Mokwape also celebrated Nelson Mandela Day by having lunch with children from Thandanani centre and spending the whole day with children playing various games.
The Mokwape Foundation was started in 2017 to help young stars in different sporting codes as well as assisting the community with social issues they deal with daily.

Thabo Kgotsi, of Thandanani, said they have been helping the public before the lockdown started with food and other projects.
“We have identified six hotspots in Mamelodi and we are helping the less fortunate, homeless and drug users including hostel dwellers,” said Kgotsi.
“We are assisting everyone wherever help is needed with the generous donations of food parcels, warm blankets and mattresses.”
Thandanani has more than 20 front-line volunteers.
