West teen caught with illegal firearm

“Further investigation will determine if the firearm was used in a crime and to whom it is registered to.”

A 19-year-old youth has been arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm in Atteridgeville.

The arrest was made by two members attached to the Atteridgeville visible policing following a tip-off from a community member.

“The officers approached the alleged suspect’s house, introduced themselves and requested to search the premises. A firearm was found hidden on the premises,” said Atteridgeville police spokesperson Mapula Rikhotso.

“Further investigation will determine if the firearm was used in a crime and to whom it is registered to.”

Atteridgeville station commander Brigadier Mbangwa Nkhwashu applauded the bravery of the community and encouraged residents to continue being vigilant to ensure their own safety was secured.

A case of unlawful possession of a firearm was opened and the suspect will appear in Atteridgeville magistrate’s court soon.
