Parents have 7 days to accept school placement offers, dept warns

This as Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced that the online 2021 admissions placement period for grade 1 and 8 would commence on 1 October.

Parents only have seven days to accept school placement offers, the Gauteng education department has warned parents wanting to place their children in grades 1 and 8 for next year.

“Those that are not accepted [by parents] after seven days of receipt will be forfeited,” it said.

This as Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced that the online 2021 admissions placement period for grade 1 and 8 would commence on 1 October.

It will end on Monday, 30 November.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s online admissions process for grades 1 and 8 applications commenced on 25 June.

The online admissions period included an application phase (from 25 June until 25 July) during which parents applied for admission to schools and upload or submitted documents to schools.

The next phase was the waiting list preparation and verification phase. It ran from 25 June until 30 September, during which schools verified applications.

The placement process is now in its final phase, during which placement offers will be issued.

Lesufi said when the online admissions system opened for applications on 25 June 2020, 157 770 applications were made for 70 073 individual learners.

“Based on each school’s capacity to accommodate learners, offers will be released on qualifying applicants on 1 October. Remaining applicants will receive offers of placement up to 31 October, as space becomes available.

“The challenge is that most schools are already overpopulated based on admissions in previous years,” he said.

He said most learners will, however, be placed.

According to him, there was an increasing demand for space in densely populated areas in the province.

“As a result, admissions pressure is experienced.”
