A beneficiary of the programme, Johanna Masheleng, said she was “over the moon” as the parcels go a long way in helping the families.

“They are really helping us. Many of us suffer from hunger as we do not have food to eat in our homes. As I am speaking to you, we did not even have any mielie meal, so this really helps.”

Masheleng said she can only provide for her grandchildren through a grant as she was not employed.

She said the lockdown has reduced her opportunities of getting piece jobs so that she can provide for her grandchildren.

“We are just glad that they are thinking of us.”

Jan Mabela, who also received a food parcel, said he was thankful.

“We are old and unemployed so the food parcels help us a lot, I am very satisfied by what I received.”

CPF chairperson Levy Matjila said they were received with open arms and people were happy to see them.

“They said they were wondering why we did not yet come this month as they know that last month we handed out parcels somewhere else.”

Matjila said donating food to poor families helped reduce crime in the community that they were operating in.

“Most of the beneficiaries will not go to bed hungry and they will not have to steal from others to provide for their families.”

He said the initiative also helped them build a relationship with the community.

“We do not people to think that we only come to the community when we want to arrest someone. We want to show them that the police are also human and we are exactly like them.”

Matjila said they do not only donate food parcels, but also help the families socially.

“We are happy to be making a change in the community,” said Unica marketing manager Nico Phokani.

“People from these communities work for us and they are like family to us.”
