Gauteng Health urges communities to continue practising non-pharmaceutical interventions to curb Covid-19 infections

Gauteng Department of Health has urged communities to continue practising non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPI) such as wearing of mask to assist in reducing Covid-19 infections.

Sanitising, wearing of masks and good cough etiquette among others continue to be golden rules in the fight against Covid-19 infections while there was no vaccine as yet, the department has said.

“SNG00, an inhaled formulation of beta-interferon is currently not registered by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) (that is in the United Kingdom) and it is therefore not available for widespread use in South Africa. It is important to note that the trial evaluating SNG00 is a phase 2 study where limited numbers of patients were enrolled. As the results are preliminary, decision-making based on such a study is considered premature. The drug is currently not available for sale.”

 

 Gauteng’s overall Covid-19 positive cases climbed to 220 910 with 197 194 recoveries and 4 299 deaths thus far, according to figures published by the Department of Health.

 

This saw the province having about 19 417 active cases.

 

The Gauteng province recorded 213 new cases on Sunday.

 

The Department of Health said out of 140 733 contacts traced (individuals who were in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19), 123 829  people have completed the 10 days monitoring period, with no symptoms reported and were de-isolated.

 

The number of hospitalised people due to Covid-19 in the province stood at 1 411. Breakdown per district of cases and recoveries:

 

– Johannesburg: 88 116 cases and 82 561 recoveries

– Ekurhuleni: 49 568 cases and 48 338 recoveries

– Tshwane: 49 220 cases and 42 708 recoveries

– Sedibeng: 14 973 cases and 11 523 recoveries

– West Rand: 14 223 cases and 12 064 recoveries

 

Sub-district totals: City of Tshwane 49 220 cases breakdown:

– City of Tshwane 1: Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane, Winterveldt, Soshanguve, Rosslyn, Karen Park, Wonderboom, Akasia, Nina Park, Orchards, Amandasig, Theresa Park, Pretoria North (10 947);

– And 44 unallocated cases. West Rand district 14 223 cases breakdown: – Mogale City: 7 353 cases;

– Rand West City: 3 812 cases; – Merafong City: 2 965 cases; And 93 unallocated cases.
