East police warn about theft of and out of motor vehicles

Most incidents are in shopping malls, Garsfontein police say.

Police in the east of Pretoria have warned motorists to beware theft of and theft out of motor vehicles in the area.

“Lately, there has been quite a number of such cases reported at the police station,” said Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Duane Lightfoot said.

“Our sector police and crime prevention units are working intelligence-driven operations according to crime tendencies to stop these crimes but still need the community’s help.

“We want to urge the community to be extra vigilant when it comes to protecting their property by making sure not to leave valuables visibly in their motor vehicles,” he said.

Lightfoot said most incidents took place at shopping malls.

“Owners are advised to make sure that they park at secure areas where there are security guards and boom gates.

“Motorists should try to use all available security devices to protect their vehicles,” he said.

Lightfoot said light-duty vehicles, especially Toyota Hilux bakkies, were targeted.
