Two cars set alight as land occupiers protest in Centurion

The cars caught fire after protesters allegedly set fire to waste next to the road.

At least two cars were set alight and security officers pelted with rocks on the corner of Saxby and Lorentz streets in Eldoraigne, Centurion, on Tuesday afternoon.

Former local ward councillor Cindy Billson who was on the scene said the incident happened just before 17:00, after waste was set alight by a group of people who were occupying nearby land.

“The group of protesters set alight a bunch of plastic bags that resulted in the cars catching fire. A bakkie and a light motor vehicle were set alight. One more car was badly damaged.

“The protesters also threw bricks at the security officers guarding the piece of land.’’

Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso said the services received an alert of the unrest around 16:58.

“Upon arrival at the scene, two cars were fully engulfed in a fire. We were able to extinguish the fire but the cars had burnt quite a lot.’’

Community Emergency Response Team SA (Cert-SA) paramedics who were also on the scene reported that at least two security officers sustained minor injuries after bricks were thrown at them.

The reason for the protest could not be established. Tshwane metro police and SAPS were monitoring the scene.
