Women demand answers from govt regarding memorandum against GBV

‘We are tired of violence against women and children abuse.’

Women are demanding that government provide prevention programmes to protect women and children.

This came after they embarked in a peaceful march from Mamelodi East bus depot to follow up on a memorandum they handed to Mamelodi
East police station last year.

The African National Congress Women League (ANCWL) branches were joined by COSAS (Congress of South African Students) and the ANC Youth League in the march.

National Executive Committee (NEC) member Sonto Thipe said they were tired of violence against women and children.

“The reason we are protesting is that we want answers to the previous memorandum handed over last year.

“We want to know how the police station is dealing with GBV in Mamelodi East since they made headlines ranked number two in the country with the most cases of gender-based violence,” said Thipe.

The protest ended with an inspection of a police station by the chairperson of the portfolio committee on women, youth and persons with disabilities Nonhlahla Ndaba.

Thipe further said, “I don’t like that Mamelodi East police station is number two in the country when it comes to these crimes. We need to address this matter as soon as possible.

“The police must work together with the community to put an end to this.”

Getty Mashele of ANCWL said the protest was against GBV and to encourage all to stand together in the fight against women abuse.

“We want to restore justice in our community and the police must make sure all cases of abuse are monitored and evaluated constantly,” said Mashele.

Acting station commander of Mamelodi East police station Colonel Lindiwe Mnguni said domestic violence is a big problem in Mamelodi East.

She blamed alcohol abuse.

Domestic violence is also a big problem. She also advised women not to withdraw their cases against the abusers.

“Our mission as the police is to clean Mamelodi. We plead with the public to work with the police to stop violence against women and children,” said Mnguni.
