#Jozi2Sosha walk successful
”We are disappointed at how drug abuse in our communities continues to spiral out of control.”
Two anti-drug organisations recently walked from Woodmead in Johannesburg to Mabopane station to raise awareness about drug abuse.
Clean up Squad, with Heaven Defence Force and Katekani, completed their two-day #Jozi2Sosha walk this week.
The walk began in Woodmead, Johannesburg on Tuesday morning, and ended at the Mabopane station on Wednesday afternoon.
The walk was attended by 50 participants whose aim was to see changes in Soshanguve, Mabopane, Garankuwa, Hammanskraal, Winterveld and other communities affected by drug abuse.
Founder of Clean Up Squad Reithutsitse Malala said this year’s walk marked the fourth anniversary of the drug awareness walk whose effort was to recruit 40 substance users to volunteer to be rehabilitated.

Malala said the difference with this year’s walk was that they got more support from stakeholders, social media.
“We have refined our rehab intake, we have beefed it up to decrease relapse numbers. We actively took 80 last year, half of them relapsed while the other are clean.
“A week ago, 10 addicts completed the programme. We have learned a lot from our previous walks, like the fact that seven weeks of rehabilitation at a centre are not enough to rehabilitate someone fully. We need a halfway house and we believe the city has the resources to help us build it.”

Malala said they were irritated by the failure to properly address drug abuse and drug dealers in communities.
“We are disappointed at how drug abuse in our communities continues to spiral out of control.”
