Alleged drunk drivers behind bars

Thirteen people were arrested over the weekend for driving motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

Motorists should twice before getting in front of their steering wheels after a few drinks, Mamelodi police warned after they arrested 13 alleged drunk drivers over the weekend.

The arrested suspects were aged between 21 and 54, according to police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane.

“Mamelodi East police strongly condemns driving while under the influence of alcohol. There is zero tolerance for drunk drivers,” said Mashiloane.

According to him, the station has measures in place to fight this issue of driving vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

“Police will continue patrolling the streets of Mamelodi, making sure that no one is driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Mamelodi East SAPS station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo commended officers for their role they play in community in ensuring that those that are not abiding by the law are brought to book.

This as police held stop and searches around the Mamelodi east precinct targeting any suspicious vehicles.

“It is our constitutional mandate to fight crime, but it so overwhelming to have positive officers who are willing to go the extra mile,” he said.

“As we are approaching the festive season, we know that alcohol abuse is a problem in the whole of Mamelodi and we are ready to deal with that.

“Drunk driving is one of the biggest threats to road safety and is against the law.”

The suspects will soon appear at the Mamelodi magistrate’s court soon.

Police further pleaded with the public to assist them fight crime, fraud, corruption, unethical behaviour and any other illegal activities by phoning the Mamelodi police station on 012-815-7079 or 08600-10111.
